In 1984, Nike was not doing so well. Their profits were lagging, and public perception of their brand was not as positive as it is today. They needed something new and exciting to revitalize their brand.Along came the Air Jordan 1. At the time, most basketball shoes were plain white. But the Air Jordan flouted this convention with bold black and red styling. A new era in sports footwear was born. In fact, the shoes stirred up controversy because of their bold styling and the league banned them. Jordan continued to wear the new shoes and racked up serious fines of up to $5,000 game. Of course, Nike was happy to pay these fines considering the publicity this controversy was generating.Air Jordan shoes were well on their way to becoming the household name we know today and revitalized the Nike brand.
